fitness wichita weight lossFor Weight Loss - Have you ever thought about how our grandparents stayed fit without the "Big Box" gyms, and fancy machines to help them with isolated, and inefficient exercises?
The answer is quite simple: Functional movements, over time develop healthy, proportioned, and long lasting bodies!
When you go to the gym, most people there with you are more interested in looking good, and chatting with friends, than they are doing ANYTHING that resembles truly strenuous effort.
For many people, that is all they need...and that is OK.
However, if you are like the rest of us, you find nothing beneficial in machines that work only your bicep, or just your calf. Isolated exercises are pointless...<<READ MORE

A Valuable Kansas Treasure

A Valuable Kansas Treasure!

"....an incredible soldier, terrific father, and brilliant trainer is an amazing resource for the state of Kansas!"

Jeremiah Sample, Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and Self-Defense trainer at Blackhawk Fitness is definitely a MVP in the military and at Blackhawk Fitness. Jeremiah trains civilians, Army soldiers, Marines, police, fire, and EMTs in the art of Self-Defense, situational awareness, and non-traditional martial arts.

He is the only qualified Combatives instructor of his caliber in the State of Kansas, and one of less than a dozen across the entire country.

His training style is unique and hands-on. His manner is mild and the methods he teaches are useful in any situation; from a hostile encounter on the street to a prize Mixed Martial Arts fighter.

The biggest reason I wanted to take the time to write a little bit about Jeremiah is because he is truly a one-of-a-kind individual both in representation and approachability. He has served his country in Iraq, trained thousands of soldiers in the principles of self-defense and now helps Blackhawk Fitness continue that same training here in Wichita.

How valuable is Jeremiah? Well, he just turned down a job to train cadets at West Point in order to stay here with his family and complete his degree. We say he's invaluable to our program.

Jeremiah's program is available to individuals and businesses who are concerned about their employees. The basic program is 8 hours and can be covered in just two 4-hour sessions. More advanced training is, of course, available.

Self-Defense Basic Certification:

4 Hours $50 per Person

Self-Defense Advanced Certification:

4 Hours $50 per Person

Open Mat Instruction:

1 Fitness Card Punch

If you would like to see what makes Jeremiah's program so unique, entertaining, and valuable, please feel free to join our Open Mat Night any Tuesday or Thursday at Office This (6:30pm to 8:30pm).

Thank you very much for your time and support!

What is the deal?

There are just so many obese people these days. I realize this is not coming as some sort of revelation to anyone...we all know 1 in 3 people are overweight; 1 in 4 people are obese. That number is growing too, of course (pun intended). There is SOME good news in that Kansas dropped from top 20 fattest states to "just" in the top 25, actually AT 25th. Keep in mind, that doesn't necessarily mean Kansas slimmed down, that just means all the other states now ahead of us are even fatter than they were last year!

What in the heck is the reason for this post? OK, so I went to a buffet-style restuarant for lunch today...not my first choice in fine-dining, but they did have a reasonable selection of healthy choices on the line. I was AMAZED by all of the obese people in the place. I would venture to say the ratio in that particular restuarant was more like 1 in 4 was in a safe weight range and in good (or at least decent) health. Several of the couples in the joint had their fat children with them, shoveling food in their face like it was their last meal.

It was like the cattle had come home to graze. I was both angry and sad at the same time. I see so many Blackhawk Fitness Boot Camp Cadets here in Wichita striving SO HARD to keep their weight under control and take their lives back...and here were two or so dozen people hell bent on getting as fat as they possibly can. I swear, one lady went up to the trough 5 times, getting a full plate each time...perhaps not FULL on the last, desert plate but close enough.

It's really a sad day today. I'd really enjoy hearing back from people on what they think we can all do together to combat the obesity problem we are all facing...and I say "ALL" because I truly mean that. Do you know that people considered obese  generally take an additional two to four sick days per year? The average medical visit is 40% higher for an obese person...and survivable conditions like heart bypass surgury are at least five times more likely with an obese person. If you are working, you are paying for this increased cost through your insurance premiums.

One last little tidbit: Every single dollar invested in some sort of health and wellness program sees a return of THREE dollars to the company doing the investing. This money is made back in the form of fewer sick days, fewer doctor visits, and a more energetic and productive staff.

Can you really AFFORD not to do something about this?

Blackhawk Fitness: Boot Camp - Wichita

Blackhawk Boot Camp workouts in Wichita, KS typically consist of four (4) parts: the dynamic stretch, the warm-up, the workout, and the static stretch. These four components are essential to maximize effects, calorie burn, and weight loss!

Excerpt from our Bootcamp Workout book!

The Stretches – Blackhawk workouts typically start and end with stretching. We begin the workouts with dynamic stretching, or more of an active stretch. We will end every workout with more of a static stretch to give the muscles a cool down and relieve stressed muscles.

The Dynamic Stretch is any activity that wakes the muscles up and prepares your body for activity. We use speed of movement and active muscle movements to provide the stretch.
This type of stretching should not be confused with ballistic stretching where a typically static stretch is accompanied by bouncing.

Dynamic Stretching are active, moving exercises. Some examples might include things as simple as side-straddle hops (we’ll learn all about those…), jogging in place, or more complex like mountain climbers, or cherry pickers.

The key to the dynamic stretch is getting some exercise benefit out of the activity while warming up the body for the real workout. Dynamic stretching has shown a decrease in muscle tears before a workout.

Static Stretching should be done at the end of the workout. The static stretch is just that, a stationary stretch typically done to the count of 10 seconds. Static stretching should not be done PRIOR to the workout. Recent studies have shown this type of stretch prior to activity can inhibit overall performance and output.

That is not at all to suggest static stretches are bad for the body. Simply that peak performance is achieved through dynamic, not static stretches.

To that end, Blackhawk Fitness: Boot Camp does a dynamic stretch at the beginning and static stretching at the end of the workout.
